Anglo-Scottish Under 13s

This tournament, which is often the first team event for our young players, was held last weekend at TBC.  Northumberland’s team, which was relatively inexperienced in comparison to the strong counties of Lothian and Yorkshire, fought hard but found the going tough.  They were also carrying the disadvantage of having to concede matches as the team were short of girls and had to field overage players.

The first match was a 3-12 defeat against Lanark but Jack Tilbury featured strongly, partnering Lucy Dodd to a win a close mixed doubles and then with Charley Robson winning another very close three-ender at second boys’ doubles.  Lucy was also a double winner as she and Amy Ward took their level doubles.  The match against Cumbria was another 3-12 loss but this time it was the girls who proved the stronger, with singles wins for Charlotte Graham and for Amy and another doubles win for Lucy and Amy.

The match against Yorkshire was lost without a win although Anna Kroot, overage and guesting from Durham, did really well in both her doubles in very close three-enders.  The first match on Sunday was against Borders, who had also found the going tough on day one.  The Borders won two of their singles and all three boys doubles but Northumberland’s girls were great with Charlotte leading Ellen Davison and Katrina Ho to singles wins.  The girls’ and mixed doubles both brought two wins and Charley had another success in his singles.  The final scoreline was 10-5 to Northumberland.  Eventual winners overall, Lothian, were too strong.  Two matches were halved but Ellen and Lucy scored our only true win in their doubles.  And it was the latter pair who came up with the one victory against Cheshire, although the overall score of 1-14 was a bit hard on us, since several of the matches had been quite close – the mixed pairs of Lucy & Charley, Amy & Ollie Edmondson both lost three-enders by the tightest margin.

It may have been a tough weekend, as far as the results were concerned, but team manager Karen Davison was delighted with the way the players all applied themselves and showed great team spirit.  The team was:-
Amy Ward, Anna Kroot, Charlotte Graham, Ellen Davison, Jue Lapworth, Katrina Ho, Lucy Dodd, Alfie Lapworth, Charley Robson, Finlay Barlow, Hugh Twelves, Jack Tilbury, Jamie Grant, Ollie Edmondson, Ryan Cockett, Xuehan Zhang.
