The Under 17 team started their season with a difficult long trip down to Market Rasen in deepest Lincolnshire. Unfortunately it was a rather depleted team as lack of availability and shortage of girls meant that we only had Ellie Roberts and Sarah Wilson ready to travel. They were supported by the boys’ foursome of Ashraf Alam, Gyan Chadda, Alex Jay and Jamie Tinnion – the latter two both having their first outings for the Under 17s.
Despite having to concede the 6 matches, we felt that we might just have enough strength left to get close to the Lincs team but unfortunately it did not quite turn out like that. The matches that were able to be played were shared 7-all, so the overall match was lost 7-13.
Sarah and Ash got us off to a comfortable start in the top mixed but Ellie and Gyan could not quite follow them and went down 14-21, 16-21. Ashraf and Sarah both powered through their singles in two ends. But although Ellie, Jamie and Gyan all had close games, the other singles were lost. Gyan’s match was particularly tight with a score of 14-21, 21-17, 20-22.
In the level doubles, the pairings of Ash & Gyan and Sarah & Ellie both won their two matches. Alex & Jamie got very close in the second boys’ doubles but went down 18-21, 19-21 but that still represented quite a promising start from two players lacking in experience.
It was a tough start to the season but still gave us some positives.
