Under 18 Shires v Cumbria – close but not close enough

Our Under 18 team travelled over to Penrith for the match against Cumbria but went down 8-12.  Unfortunately they were without Emily Harrison, whose absence probably swung the match the way of the Cumbrians.  Thanks to Manager-For-The-Day Elizabeth Alam for sending the following report.

Particular congratulations to Ashraf and Sarah who were unbeaten in the tie.  We expect a strong contribution from Ashraf, and he rarely disappoints.  But Sarah – still an Under 16 – was outstanding today, and her performance included turning round a first set loss to battle back to a 23-21 final set win in singles.
We expected this tie to be tight as Cumbria have some depth at this age group, and it certainly started that way, with the match poised at 2-2 after the mixed.  Despite some great battling from the girls, with both Anna and Rachel losing close three-enders, we were rather disappointed to only take 2 out of 8 singles rubbers.  This opened up a significant lead for Cumbria and really sealed our fate.  We couldn’t make headway into Cumbria’s lead in the level doubles, which ended all square (4-4), so the tie ended with a 12-8 for Cumbria.
Thanks to the whole team for playing with good spirit and working hard to the end.  And thanks to Fiona Grogan for driving the girls!  Next time we’re in that hall in January, we’ll take thermals and a hot water bottle!

The team were – Abby Grogan, Anna Railton, Rachel Bogan and Sarah Bambrick; Alex Jay, Ashraf Alam, George Moran and Jamie Tinnion.
