A technical problem with our website has meant there has been a delay in posting reports for the juniors’ initial Shires League matches. The first of these took place at TBC in mid-November when the Under 18s played Yorkshire2. This was a close match which we just lost 9-11 and the following is team manager Karen Davison’s report.
Our Under 18 team took on a strong Yorkshire 2nd team on Saturday 16th November at Tyneside Badminton Centre. With Lucy Dodd away competing in the U15 Gold tournament at Milton Keynes, Eve Beechinor-Collins kindly stepped into the team, which was: Amy Ward Charlotte Graham, Ellen Davison, Eve Beechinor-Collins, Finlay Smith, James Dodd, Matty Grant and Tim Bodani.
The mixed discipline was up first with our regular partnership of Tim/Charlotte playing 1st seeds and being pushed to a 3rd end, but winning this comfortably 21-11. Ellen/Finlay were successful in their match, winning 21-13 & 21-8, but we were unable to notch up any more wins in the mixed even though the scores were high.
The overall match score was even going into the boys’ singles. Finlay and James recorded wins in two ends for their matches, 21-18 & 21-18 for Finlay and 21-19 & 21-17 for James with some fantastic play by both boys. Tim and Matty fought hard for their games but unfortunately were just edged out by more experienced players.
Again, the score was even at the start of the girls singles. Charlotte and Amy recorded high scores in their singles games, just missing out on pushing the games to a 3rd end. Ellen had an excellent win in her singles, fighting back after losing the first end to take a close 3 ender. Eve fought hard but her relative lack of experience told and the score now was 5-7 to Yorkshire at the start of the level doubles.
Our regular partnership of Tim/James won their first game to 13 in the 3rd end but lost their second game to 18 & 19 with some close and long rallies. Finlay/Matty played a fantastic, exciting three-end game which they took 22-20 in the 3rd. Unfortunately, we could not take either of the reverse matches although again we were very competitive.
Our experienced girls pairing of Amy/Charlotte began their two doubles matches with an excellent 21-16 & 21-19 victory and backed this up with a second convincing win 21-15 & 21-17. Ellen partnered Eve and they played well together with Ellen moving the opposition around tactically to push their game to a 3rd end but they lost narrowly to 19. Their second game was very close and a great game to watch but unfortunately it was lost 18-21 and 21-23.
And so the final score was Yorkshire 2nds 11 – Northumberland 9. This was a very encouraging result considering that this was a relatively young team with only two “true” under 18s and several much younger players. It bodes well for the matches coming up either side of Christmas.
