Northumberland’s round of the BE Under 15 Bronze circuit took place on Saturday at The Tyneside Badminton Centre. There was an encouraging entry from our Performance Centre and Futures Squad, with 13 players out of the total of 25 entrants. Rachel Bogan took the major honours with gold medals in all three disciplines.Rachel was the top seed in the singles and came through the single-group event without being unduly pressed by the other five competitors. Asmi Shembekar from Yorkshire was the runner-up and County Durham’s Madeleine Atkinson took the bronze medal. Rachel and Maddy teamed up to win the girls’ doubles in similarly commanding fashion. Rachel’s hatrick came in the mixed where she partnered our under 14 Tim Bodani, again being undefeated. Northumberland’s Matthew Grant, in a scratch pairing with Asmi Shembekar of Yorkshire, almost snatched the silver medals coming up just short of the all-Yorkshire pair of Danielle Collinson and Cameron Murray.
The boys’ singles was played with four round-robin groups. Northumberland’s players all found the going tough but Finlay Smith and Grant were the runners-up in their groups, while Bodani and Durham’s Daniel Armstrong both scored two wins. Special mention should be made of Matthew Short’s efforts in a particularly tough group – though not winning a match he got very close in three of his four games. Cameron Murray emerged as a deserving winner from an all-Yorkshire final against Edward Fricker. The boys’ doubles went to Yorkshire’s top seeds, Fricker and Simeon Mitchell. Group runners-up, Matthew Grant and James Dodd, took bronze medals.
