North Midway Under 16

An Under 16 team travelled down to Sheffield recently.  They were young and inexperienced and knew it would be a difficult day: but manager Christine Railton kept them battling together as a team and they will all have learnt from the experience.  This is Christine’s report on the day.  Thanks to Christine and to Deb Rodda for their support. It was a very tough day for the players but they were all winners in terms of fantastic team spirit and behaviour and were a credit to their county. Northumberland were a young team in comparison to some of the other counties but played some excellent badminton in some very tough games. All players were very competitive, working hard for every point. The team were –
Boys: George Moran, Alex Jay, Jamie Tinnion, and Gabriel Rodda
Girls: Anna Railton, Rachel Bogan, Abby Grogan and Sarah Bambrick

The ten counties were split into two groups. Northumberland were in group B and played 4 matches against Warwickshire, Leicestershire 1, Cheshire and Yorkshire 2. We played a final round against Staffordshire from Group A who finished in the same place as us within their group. Each game was 1 game to 21 with no extensions.

Northumberland v Warwickshire: Lost 0-10
A difficult opening match against Warwickshire who eventually came top of Group B. Warwickshire fielded a very strong team with a lot of mature looking players. Jamie Tinnion came close to winning his game with some great shots but just lost to 18. All games were played to high standard and very competitively.

Northumberland v Leicestershire 1: Lost 1-9
After a long break, we played Leicestershire 1 who were another strong team. Jamie played a fantastic game and delivered the one win of the match but it was close. Gabriel and Alex played well together producing some great shots down the line but eventually lost to 15 and the score does not reflect the effort of both players. Anna played a very competitive game of singles but was unlucky not to win and then again with Abby in doubles.

Northumberland v Cheshire: Lost 2-8
George and Jamie delivered some excellent shots in a tight doubles game to win their game and Jamie went on to win his singles game in another tight dramatic game. Gabriel and Sarah played very competitively but lost out in their mixed doubles game. Alex and Abby played well together winning some good points and were unlucky to not win.

Northumberland v Yorkshire 2: Lost 3-7
Yorkshire 2 were a girl short and so forfeited 2 games but they were still a strong team and the overall score does not reflect how close some of the games were and we were ultimately unlucky not be win more games.  Rachel played a fantastic match against a much older opponent and won convincingly to 10. Anna was unlucky not to win her game after playing some great smashes. Jamie and Abby fought hard and played some great shots but were just beaten to 20. George played very well and led throughout the first half of his singles game but his opponent re-grouped and came back strongly to win.

Northumberland v Staffordshire: Won 6-4
A strong end to a long day and a win to lift the spirits!  All players played very strong competitive games with some great wins and some very unlucky losses. Sarah and Gabriel led all the way and produced a great win to 10. Alex was leading at the change of ends and played some great badminton but was very unlucky to just lose to 20. Rachel played another great game and produced a good win to 19. Anna and Abby led all the way and played some great rallies with a strong performance to win. With Rachel and Sarah playing another strong girls doubles giving Northumberland another win. Jamie and George played a competitive game which saw them winning to 10.
