BADMINTON AWARDS FOR TALENTED YOUNGSTERS
Two of Northumberland’s talented young badminton stars have recently been presented with awards by the Chair of North Tyneside Council, Councillor Mulvenna. The awards for the Most Promising Under 12 Boy and Girl Badminton Players in Northumberland were established in 2003 by Councillor John Carter: at that time he was the Chair of North Tyneside Council and had become a great fan of badminton during his time in office, partly through the Council’s wonderful support for our Under 19 tournament. The awards have continued to be presented each year at a ceremony hosted by North Tyneside Council.
This year saw Rachel Bogan from Ponteland receive the Girl’s award for the second year running. Rachel has been training extremely hard at the Northumberland Performance Centre and has made tremendous progress during the season, even going on to play in the County’s Under 16 team. The Boy’s award went to the youngest ever winner, 8 year old Alex Sutherland from Whitley Bay. Alex has been showing tremendous potential and on court he displays a real determination to win every point. Hopefully both award winners will go on to realise their full potential and become highly successful badminton players!
