Good Win for Shires U18 v Cumbria

Our U18 team travelled to Carlisle University to play this fixture a couple of weekends ago.  Thanks to team manager Karen Davison for this report. The team was :  Melvin Cherian, Arif Alam, Vikram Nayyar, Dominic Wilson-Baker, Sarah Bambrick, Lucy Dodd, Ellen Davison, Eve Beechinor-Collins

The match started with the the mixed doubles discipline, partnerships of Sarah/Melvin;  Lucy/Arif;  Ellen/Vikram and  Eve/Dominic, again trying out pairings of those team members going to the ICT in April.  Very strong performance from all players winning all games easily in two ends so Northumberland led 4-0 going into the Boys Singles.

Melvin and Arif had tough singles games and were unable to beat Cumbria’s 1st and 2nd seeds, Arif taking his game to a 3rd end, but both games were very competitive with some good rallies played.  Vikram and Dominic both won their singles games in 2 ends, so Northumberland lead 6-2 with the girls singles next.  Sarah and Lucy won their matches in two ends, Ellen was pushed to a 3rd end but was successful winning to 9;  Eve fought well but lost her match.  Northumberland were still leading 9-3.

The boys doubles partnership of Melvin/Arif are well matched in ability and experience and won both games comfortably in two ends;  Vikram/Dominic won the first game in two ends but were pushed to a 3rd end against Cumbria’s first pair: this was tense but they took it 21-19 to give Northumberland all four games in boys doubles.  The girls doubles partnerships were Sarah/Ellen who won both their games very convincingly;  Lucy/Eve won their first but lost the 2nd game in tight ends.

This had been a good, confident performance from all of this under 18 team, some of whom were only aged only 12 and 13!  Well done Team Northumberland, winning 16 – 4.
