Anglo-Scottish Under 17

The first event in the new season’s Anglo-Scottish team tournaments took place this weekend.  We are extremely grateful to Lizzie and Mark Jerdan for looking after the team but also for producing this very prompt and comprehensive report.

The Anglo-Scottish event for Under 17s took place this weekend at Tyneside Badminton Centre, with six teams from north and south of the border competing.  Northumberland, with a relatively inexperienced but young team, were extremely grateful for some younger girls stepping in to enable us to field a full team.  They found the going tough and finished without a win in sixth place but fought hard and still produced some very positive performances.  Yorkshire brought a strong team and took overall first place with an 8-7 win over Lothian in the deciding match.

Northumberland’s team was managed by Lizzie & Mark Jerdan with valuable coaching support from Karen Davison (both days), Ellie Roberts (Saturday), Jamie Tinnion (both days) & Martin Fagan (Sunday) and comprised Rachel Bogan, Ellen Davison, Natalie Ho, Libby Hall, Molly Claassen, Emily Coates, Sarah Bambrick, Arif Alam, Matty Jerdan, Vikram Nayyar, Andrew Liang, Tom Cox, Christian Sharp, Finlay Smith, Jai Nayyar & Matthew Grant.  Several of them were making their junior county debuts.

First up was a match against Lanarkshire.  This looked like a strong match and we came out overall with a 4-11 loss.  Matty J won his singles and Arif & Matty J and Vikram & Jai took their doubles games with Finlay & Tom narrowly missing out on their doubles, losing 7-6 in a very close three-ender.  Molly and Emily, both playing their first matches for the county, got off to very encouraging starts: Molly & Matthew G played strongly to win their mixed and Emily got very close with Arif.  There was a tight three-end loss in the singles from Vikram.

Unfortunately we were no match for Yorkshire although we managed to take two ends.  The match against Cumbria was looking to be much closer with Emily & Finlay winning their mixed, Libby & Tom winning their singles, Arif narrowly losing his singles in a 7-5 three-end game.  The girls doubes pairings did well.  Both Libby & Rachel and Natalie & Ellen played really well to win their games and Molly & Emily narrowly missed out in another close three-ender.  The boys doubes all went to three ends with  Jai & Vikram getting close but only Tom & Matthew G won.  The final result was that we lost the match 6-9 but it could have been much closer.

On Sunday, the first match was against Lothian. This was looking to be another tough match but Northumberland got off to a surprisingly good start winning all three mixed games with the pairings of Rachel & Matty, Sarah & Arif and Ellen & Finlay.  Vikram played well to win his singles and Matty & Andrew won their boys doubles.  Lothian won overall 10-5.
Our final match was against Cheshire: our spirits were still high and the team continued to show their positivity and determination.  Rachel & Matty and Sarah & Arif both won their mixed games and there was also a very close third mixed game for Ellen & Finlay who just lost in the third end.  Andrew took our only win at singles.  Rachel & Libby and Sarah & Ellen took both their doubles games to three ends but both pairs lost narrowly.  Matty & Andrew won their doubles with Vikram & Christian getting close.  Cheshire won the match 11-4.

The whole team must be commended on their resilience and determination over a tough, early-season weekend and a special mention must go to the younger and inexperienced girls, Ellen, Emily, Natalie, Molly & Libby,  who stepped in to enable us to put out a full team: they should all have gained much from the experience and their efforts were very much appreciated.  Thanks must also go to Karen, Ellie, Jamie & Martin for their coaching support and encouragement over the weekend.
Sunday’s team is shown here.
