Northumberland Badminton association have been working closely with Badminton England to develop a new ‘Workforce Academy’ which aims to bring committed coaches, officials and volunteers together to learn from each other and provide a more structured approach to coaching and volunteering across the county. The Workforce Academy will provide support, training, mentoring and continuous professional development (CPD), in return for new coaches and volunteers delivering more badminton activity locally.
The Workforce Academy is now OPEN for applications anyone across Northumberland who is actively volunteering within badminton or would like to take the first step in their volunteering journey (this could be coaching, club committee volunteering, running tournaments, website design, sports journalism plus many other opportunities!).

What will you get from the Workforce Academy?
The latest North Tyneside Social Badminton Tournament, held at Hadrian Leisure Centre in Wallsend, was another hugely successful event, attracting 56 players from all over the region, with an age range of 14 to 74!! As well as many familiar faces taking part, it was very pleasing to see a good number of new ones, including a very friendly group of Chinese players! As usual with these social tournaments, the aim was to cater for the casual, social players who enjoy some friendly competition and playing against different people.
Everyone got plenty of games, as the first rounds were played in groups before knockout semi-finals and finals. “What is so good about these tournaments is the fact that players mix – when their group games are finished, they take the opportunity to play with others who have also not reached the knockout stages. It is all very friendly yet competitive. There were plenty of very close, exciting matches, and it was great to see players of all ages on the same court enjoying their games.” commented Northumberland County Secretary Norma Waterfield, who helped organise and run the tournament.
There was an excellent entry from our Under 17s for the Northumberland round on the BE Bronze Junior Circuit and further success for several of our players in the tournament held last Sunday at the Tyneside Badminton Centre. (more…)
