21st place out of 35 entrants may not sound so good but for Northumberland, given its location and relatively limited playing resources, it was quite an achievement. This is also put into perspective by our results in recent years which, after the 20th place in 2003, have almost always been 30th or lower and even down to a sad 41st eight years ago. (more…)

Anglo-Scottish Under 16 Team Tournament

The annual round of the Under 16 event in the Anglo-Scottish tournament series took place recently at the Tyneside Badminton Centre. Eight counties from either side of the border took part over the two days. The Northumberland team was augmented by reinforcements from Durham but also had to bring in a couple of overage players, which meant that some matches had to be conceded. (more…)

NORTH MIDWAY LEAGUE UNDER 14

The second round in the North Midway Under 14 took place in Sheffield on Sunday 8th February.  Christine Railton very kindly “volunteered” to look after the team and her report is set out below.  The team finished 8th on the day, of the 10 teams competing and the overall result based on the two rounds saw us in 8th place. Junior BE Bronzes

Northumberland’s weekend on the Bronze circuit has just been held.  There were a number of successes by our players but pride of place must go to Jonathan Elsdon who won the Under 17 boys’ singles and then added the boys’ doubles title.  The full results can be found on the Badminton England website and the following report has just been sent to the “Evening Chronicle”, hopefully for publication in the near future. A tough trip for the Under 15s against Yorkshire

The county’s Under 15 Shires League team made the journey down to Huddersfield on Sunday to play their rearranged match against the Yorkshire 1st team.  It was always likely to be a difficult match and so it proved, particularly as they were without no. 1 boy Ashraf Alam and then experienced an injury to Andrew Howard.  Andrew’s father Chris, aided by Christine Railton, travelled with the team which comprised the following players:
Anna Railton, Emily Harrison, Lexie Howard and Sarah Bambrick; Alex Jay, Andrew Howard, George Moran and Jamie Tinnion.  Many thanks to Chris and Christine and well done to the players.  This is Chris’s report: (more…)
