The next match was against the Isle of Man, with more evenly matched games. Northumberland started off strongly in the mixed doubles with Ellen/Matty G winning 21-4. Jai & Natalie were unlucky not to pick up their singles games after well fought matches. Our boys doubles of Tim/Matty S & Dominic/Mark both won, which took the score to 3-2 in our favour. Rachel/Maddy were very unlucky with their girls doubles: the game was extremely tight, point for point, but they just lost to 19. However, Charlotte/Amy managed to secure a win to 18. Final score Northumberland 4 – IOM 3.
Yorkshire Under 16 Team Tournament
This is team manager Karen Davison’s report after an enjoyable trip to York on a very hot Sunday with our U16 team which was: Maddy Atkinson, Rachel Bogan, Ellen Davison, Charlotte Graham, Natalie Ho, Amy Ward, Tim Bodani, Matty Grant, Jai Nayyar, Matty Short, Mark Walker, Dominic Wilson-Baker.
The format was 1 XD, 1 BS, 1 GS, 2 BD, 2 GB, with one end to 21, making a total of 7 matches. The first match was against an extremely strong and experienced Leicestershire. We team took a while to settle into the match with Rachel/Maddy narrowly losing 20-22. We were handed a girls doubles game as Leicestershire only had 5 girls so had to concede this match. Final score 6-1 to Leicestershire.
Up third was a strong Warwickshire team. Our opponents had only brought 5 girls so had to concede their mixed game to us. Mark and Maddy had some very tough competition in their singles matches, fought until the last point, but were unable to overcome their opponents strength and experience. Tim/Matty G & Jai/Dominic were successful in their doubles matches winning to 16 & 17 respectively. Unfortunately, we were unable to pick up from the girls doubles matches: our partnerships of Ellen/Rachel & Natalie/Charlotte were up against extremely strong girls, nearer the U16 age group restriction. Final score Northumberland 3 – Warwickshire 4.
The fourth match was against a Yorkshire 2nd team. Some tough matches for our team against some familiar faces but we were unable to secure any wins until the girls doubles pairings of Rachel/Maddy & Charlotte/Natalie, who scored wins to 16 & 11 respectively. The match finished Northumberland 2 – Yorkshire (2) 5.
The final match of the day was against a strong Yorkshire 1 team. Matty G/Tim played a very mature and tactical game of doubles, narrowly losing 20-22. The rest of the team fought well and competed in every match, but Yorkshire were too experienced for our relatively young team.
Northumberland finished last just losing out on countback to IOM, but several games were very close and could have gone our way. There were lots of positive performances from the team for us as a squad to work on. My thanks go to the players, who were impeccably behaved on and off the court and to the parents who made the journey and supported the team and myself.
We ended the day sitting in the park with a well deserved ice cream!!!!
