Under 17 Shires v Yorkshire 1

Northumberland’s Under 17 team faced the first team from Yorkshire, habitually strong, at the Tyneside Badminton Centre recently and suffered a 6-14 defeat. That said, this was really quite an encouraging performance for the County’s coaches to build on, with several of the matches being lost after hard-fought, close encounters.
The opening mixed were lost after two close ends but at third string, Ellie Roberts and Alex Jay took their first end to 19 and were backed up by Anna Railton and Jamie Tinnion who went on to win their match 21-17, 24-22. Unfortunately, Ellie and Alex could not quite maintain their strong start and lost in three ends.
The singles started with a magnificent match between Ashraf Alam and his good friend from Yorkshire, Jay Rathi. This was somewhat topsy-turvey but Ash stormed back to win 10-21, 21-8, 21-19. Gyan Chadda and Alex Jay both lost their matches after good performances against strong opponents but Jamie continued his excellent form to record a 21-13, 21-10 win. Our girls all found the going tough against their Yorkshire opponents, although Emily Harrison had got close in a 22-24 first end against Kate Walker. But then fourth-string Anna Railton, in her first match with the Under 17s, pulled herself back from her 19-21 first end to win against her ailing opponent. At the end of the singles it was 8-4 to Yorkshire.
Ashraf and Gyan led the attempted fight-back with two excellent doubles wins. Alex and Jamie got close in the second strings’ match and Sarah and Emily lost their second match after a very close encounter by 21-12, 20-22, 18-21. But all four girls doubles were lost and with it the match.
Team: Anna Railton, Ellie Roberts, Emily Harrison & Sarah Wilson; Alex Jay, Ashraf Alam, Gyan Chadda & Jamie Tinnion.
