It was a  clean sweep of the winner’s trophies for Andrew Liang from Shiremoor at Sunday’s Under 13 County Championships.  And he was closely followed by Ponteland’s Rachel Bogan, who won the two girls’ events that were played.

There was a very encouraging entry of 22 boys for the singles.  They played off an initial round robin in four groups, the winners of which progressed to the semi finals.  There were good performances at this stage from a number of players, most notably Arif Alam, Christian Sharp, Tobias Morrison, James Seabrook and Tim Bodani, but the four players who emerged unbeaten were Andrew Liang, Ben Walker, Neil Shi and Melvin Cherian.  Andrew beat Ben 21/5 and Melvin beat Neil 21/14 to set up the final, and Andrew’s greater strength took him to a comfortable 21/10 win.

In the boys’ doubles, the two group winners were Arif & Melvin and Andrew & Neil.  The final was a very close match with Arif & Melvin fighting back from four points down to level at 20-all, only to lose the crucial match point.  In the consolation matches, Tobias and Ben just held off the challenge of Tim and Matthew Grant to take third place 21/18.

Unfortunately, there were just three entrants for the girls singles, which was taken by Rachel.  But both Aditi Gupta and Libby Harding showed potential for the future.  A small mixed doubles was also played and was won by Rachel in partnership with Andrew.  Aditi and Melvin were the runners-up.
