Shires Under 17 v Cheshire2

Northumberland’s Under 17 team played its fourth Shires League match against Cheshire’s second team at a neutral venue in Leeds recently. Yet to win a match, we were significantly hampered by the absence of several key players and went down 8-12. Having had to draft in a number of young and inexperienced replacements, this represented a pretty fair result.
The top mixed pairings of Sarah Wilson & Ashraf Alam and Emily Harrison & Alex Jay got us off to a promising start with good wins, the second pair coming back well to secure their victory in the only three-ender of the day. Ash, Sarah and Emily then chalked up comfortable wins at singles. In the other singles, Melvin Cherian and Anuj Gupta at boys and Sarah Bambrick and Rebecca Oakley at girls, all four of them debutants and including two under 14s, fought hard and got well into double figures but could not take an end.
In the level doubles, Ash and Alex just lost out in a close match to the opposition’s top pair but then won an even closer match in the cross-over doubles. Sarah and Emily took both their matches in the girls’ doubles.
Whilst the overall result was perhaps rather disappointing, Northumberland could travel home knowing that its full-strength team should have taken the match with a fair degree of comfort: and it was good to see some of the younger players getting more experience to stand them in good stead for the future.
