North Midway Under 17

The first of our regular jaunts to Sheffield took place last Sunday.  Richard Taylor and Christine Railton looked after a team comprising Abby Grogan, Anna Railton, Rebecca Oakley, Sarah Bambrick, Christian Sharp, George Moran, Jack Thorpe and Neil Shi.  They found the going tough against the bigger stronger counties.  But they came away with one satisfying victory, 8-2 over Yorkshire 2, and all the players scored at least one individual win.  The match against Cheshire was lost 2-8 but Anna’s singles and Sarah & Jack’s doubles were both lost 20-21 and both boys doubles were not far off wins, so it could have been much closer.  The next match against Warwickshire saw George and the Anna/Sarah pairing repeat their earlier wins and Anna scored a good singles win to make it 3-7.  Lancashire had brought a team that was way over strength with ineligible players: we are currently awaiting the organisers’ decision on how to deal with this for the overall position on the day.  Against Yorkshire 2, both boys singles were lost with Jack not quite being able to force his first win, going down 20-21.  All the others won to record an 8-2 overall.  Leicester were too strong for us, although we got close in some games and Anna/Sarah again took a good win.  The last match was against Yorkshire 1 and we did surprisingly well, only losing 4-6.  George, Anna and Sarah all won their singles with Anna/Sarah again winning their doubles.
Well done to the team: it was a pretty good effort all round.
