This season Amy Ward, Charlotte Graham, Ellen Davison and Lucy Dodd have brought a considerable number of medals back to Tyneside from various Under 15 and Under 17 Silver and Bronze tournaments – and the boys have done ok too. These successes continued in the recent Tees Valley U15 Silver. Here Lucy Dodd, top seed but still an under 13, made it to the singles final but lost 11-15, 9-15 to Scotland’s Eva Tremble, who had won our own U15 Silver back in November. However in the girls doubles Lucy went one better partnering Ellen Davison to win the gold medals. A very close win over the Scots (15-17, 18-16, 18-16) gave them the springboard and they followed this with a 12 and 12 victory over team-mates Charlotte and Amy, who took the runners-up medals.
More success came in today’s Yorkshire U17 Bronze. Tim Bodani and Finlay Smith both made it from an entry of 30 to reach the semis in the singles. Tim had needed a nail-biting 30-29 win in his quarter final but then lost 12-21 to the eventual winner. Finlay got much closer but lost his semi to 19. In the girls singles, Ellen won two of her three matches but took the group win on points countback. Lucy won all three of her group matches, going on to beat Ellen 21-10 in the final.
The girls doubles saw continued success for the Ward/Graham partnership. In a very tight group, where three pairs had two wins and one loss each, they emerged with the best points difference to take the gold medals. Lucy and Ellen had actually beaten Charlotte and Amy 21-19 but only finished third overall. So tight!
