Lucy and Cameron are “the most promising”

In 2003, while he was Chair of North Tyneside Council, Councillor John Carter became an avid fan of badminton, attending a number of our tournaments in North Tyneside.  He decided that he would like to set up an annual award for the most promising boy and girl in Northumberland, and so the annual Under 12 awards were established.

This year’s awards were presented yesterday by the current Chair, Councillor Cath Davis, and went to Lucy Dodd and Cameron Twynholm.  Their parents and immediate family were present, along with several of the county officials and coaches, and they were all delighted to be part of a lovely civic ceremony at the Council Offices.  Councillor Davis praised the accomplishments of Lucy and Cameron, both of whom will shortly be members of our Under 13 team making the annual trip to Largs for the Annual Scottish weekend at the end of May.

Lucy has been playing badminton since she was 7, playing in Ponteland with coach Phil Hall.  She first represented Northumberland aged 8 and has played at all levels upto Under 16s.  Among her highlights this season were winning the singles in two regional BE events and being triple county champion at Under 13.  She is currently ranked number 8 nationally at her year group.

Cameron is from Pegswood, plays with coach Karen Davison in Morpeth and joined our Futures squad early this season: since when he has impressed our coaches with his application and eagerness to listen and learn.  He has played twice for the county’s teams and has had success in the Super Series at both singles and doubles.  Like Lucy he is a multi-talented sportsman and, apart from badminton, is particularly talented at golf.
