The first of our junior county championships for the new season, for Under 13s and Under 17s, were played recently at the Tyneside Badminton Centre. The number of entrants was a little disappointing but there were some new names playing and some of these really made their mark and showed themselves as having potential for the future.
In the Under 13 events, established player Rachel Bogan took all three disciplines with ease. Libby Harding from North Tyneside was runner-up in the singles and also partnered Rachel to win the girls doubles against Charlotte Graham and Amy Ward. In the boys singles, a couple of late withdrawals forced a re-organisation into a single large group of seven. There were several very close games here and no player won all their matches but Tim Bodani from the Ponteland Club emerged as the overall winner with Michael Laux (Morpeth) as a close runner-up. Tim then partnered Matthew Grant (Ponteland) to win the doubles with Michael runner-up again, in partnership with Harry Johnson (also Morpeth). The mixed doubles went to the scratch pairing of Rachel Michael, with Charlotte and Matthew taking the runners-up medals.
The Under 17 events featured more experienced junior county players and produced some keenly competitive matches. The girls singles was taken by Emily Harrison, the crucial win being a 15-12, 15-7 score against Ellie Roberts. A new player into the county squad, Rebecca Oakley, scored one win. Emily and Ellie took the doubles comfortably. There were two very competitive groups in the boys singles but the two seeds, Ashraf Alam and Gyan Chadda, both emerged unscathed to contest the final which was taken 15-13, 15-9 by Ashraf. There were encouraging performances from several other county juniors, notably Andrew Hogg, Alex Jay, Andrew Liang and Anuj Gupta: it was unfortunate that the promising Jamie Tinnion had to withdraw with back problems which had developed during the singles.
The Under 17 boys doubles was taken by Ashraf and Gyan with Alex and Andrew (Liang) as the runners-up. The mixed doubles group was won by triple-champion Emily and Gyan after a 9 and 6 win over their nearest rivals, Ellie and Anuj.
