Emily and Ashraf win at Tees Valley U17 Silver

There was success for several players from the Northumberland Performance Centre in the recent Tees Valley Under 17 Silver tournament, part of the Badminton England Junior Circuit. Emily Harrison from Whitley Bay was a medal-winner in all three disciplines. Having won all three matches in her singles qualifying group, she was unfortunate to come up against the ultimate event winner, Gunjan Randhawa of Middlesex, in the semi-final going down 15-17, 15-9, 11-15. But there was success for her in both doubles. Playing in the girls’ doubles with her regular partner, Louise Peacock of Yorkshire, Emily took a tightly-contested, single-group event winning on points countback to take the gold medal. This was followed up with victory in the mixed doubles when Emily and Jack Railton (Lincolnshire), sailed through their group undefeated and then saw off the Scottish top seeds, Jennifer Lafferty and Harry Mobey 8-15, 15-13, 15-9.
In the boys’ events, Ashraf Alam was top seed for the singles and went on to justify this. He won his group and then the semi-final without losing an end and then faced Brandon Tsang of Scotland in the final. He took the first end to 6 before Tsang fought back winning the second to 13. The decider was equally close but Ash emerged victorious taking the third end 15-13. He then teamed up with Durham’s Murray Wright to win their boys’ doubles group convincingly. The final saw them facing more Scots, the top seeds Joshua Apiliga and Adam Pringle, and very quickly losing the first end to 2. They turned it round remarkably to take the second end 17-15 but could not quite get close enough after that, going down 11-15 in the decider.
