Senior County Championship – Strong Comebacks But Not Enough

Last Saturday saw the inaugural matches in the new Senior County Championships format where counties play each other at centralised venues over three weekends throughout the season rather than travel home and away for individual fixtures.  North’s first team travelled to Harrogate to play Yorkshire 4 and Ulster in their opening Division 2 North fixtures, playing over the best of 11 rubbers with 2 of each discipline except for men’s singles where a third is played. Senior County Restricted – New Champions All Round!

There were new champions in all events in the recent annual “Restricted” tournament.  With some 50 players competing, there was some excellent play, particularly in the group games and semi-finals.  Afterwards, Chairman of Selectors Steve Abbott was enthused: “With new champions in every discipline, and with the county’s talented juniors holding their own amongst the seniors, it bodes well for the coming season and it was great to see Philip Pahatouridis take his first county senior title at only 17 years of age”.
