Our U16s played their last match of the season last weekend against a Yorkshire team in their Shires League Satellite fixture at the Tyneside Badminton centre. The team were managed by Karen Davison: please read on for her report.
Ellen Davison, Lucy Dodd, Natalie Ho, Charlotte Graham, Amy Ward
Tim Bodani, James Dodd, Matty Grant, Matty Short, Finlay Smith
Yorkshire only brought 3 boys, so James Dodd stood in as a sub for them, these games would be recorded as wins for Northumberland.
We started off with the mixed discipline. Partnerships of Tim/Charlotte, Ellen/Finlay, Natalie/Matty G, Amy/Matty S resulted in 2 wins for Northumberland. Tim/Charlotte losing to 16 in the 3rd end. Ellen/Finlay won to 18 in the 3rd end. Natalie/Matty G lost to 18 in the 3rd end. All four mixed matches saw some fantastic tactical play from the team and they deserved to win all four games.
Next was boys singles with wins from Finlay and James. Special mention to James who fought hard to win 21-14 in the 3rd end. Girls singles – Lucy Dodd recorded a win in her singles but special mention to Amy Ward who played a very close and long match losing to 16 in the 3rd end.
The boys doubles partnerships were Tim/Matty S who were unlucky not to win their first match playing an exceptional, mature game of doubles losing 24-22 in the 3rd end. Finlay/Matty G who haven’t played together before, were unlucky not to pick up their reverse doubles.
Girls doubles partnerships were Charlotte/Natalie and Ellen/Lucy. Charlotte/Natalie took the first seeds to a 3rd end but were unlucky not to pick up the games losing to 17. Ellen/Lucy recorded the only girls doubles win pushing the first pairing and winning 21-16, 21-16.
The final score was 11-9 to Yorkshire, but some of these games could have gone Northumberland’s way. The team, now with a lot more experience, played well together and showed fighting spirit throughout.
My thanks first of all go to all the parents who supported the team with every hit of the shuttle. Also to Ellie Roberts and Martin Fagan for on court coaching and finally to the team for making this an exciting match to watch and for me to manage.
