24 hour badminton marathon raises funds for local cancer charity

Riverside Leisure Centre Badminton Club, based at Morpeth, have raised a fantastic £4,000 for a local charity by taking part in a marathon 24 hour badminton session.

Over 90 players, not only from Riverside but players from other clubs, juniors from our Performance Centre and Futures groups ranging from 8 to 75 years of age, took part in the event aiming to keep the shuttle active for 24 hrs. Every penny raised was donated to the local Henry Dancer Day charity that supports children and families with cancer.

This is the sixth Badminton-a-thon that Riverside Leisure Centre’s Badminton Coach, Karen Davison, has organised raising a total of £19,000 for local worthwhile causes.

Karen writes “I’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of all those who helped us to raise this amazing sum of money. Every single penny will go to the chosen charity. I’d like to thank Active Northumberland for providing the courts for free, Yehlex UK and Northumberland Badminton Association for donating shuttles, local businesses who donated raffle prizes and all those taking part collecting sponsorship or making a personal donation. Thank you.”

A great event – very well done to Karen and all involved!
