Derek Talbot MBE

Mr Derek Talbot, 65, from Whitley Bay receives a MBE for his services to badminton. He won gold at the Munich Olympic Games in addition to four gold medals in the Commonwealth Games, 11 national titles and three European gold medals.

During his tenure as the first Chairman of the World Badminton Players Association, he oversaw the sport’s transition from amateur to semi-professional.

After retiring, he designed and endorsed a full range of badminton rackets, providing high quality equipment to children, and professional players.

His company – Talbot Torro, are now the official suppliers to Badminton England and for the Badminton Into School Initiative.

He has also been highly active in fundraising for the British Olympic Association and other local clubs and charities.
