The weekend started with the Under 13 Silver event at Thornaby and was followed on the Sunday with the Under 15 Silver at York.At Thornaby, Ashraf Alam upset the seeding when he beat Josh McColgan in his group to go into the final against Durham’s Murray Wright. An excellent match: Murray winning the first end 15-9; but then Ashraf turned it round to move to 14-12 in the second; only for Murray to strike back to take the match 17-15. The two of them then teamed up to win the boys doubles and Sarah Wilson partnered Murray to be runners-up in the mixed. Sarah and Ellie Roberts came third in the girls doubles.
A significant Northumberland contingent travelled down to York on the Sunday for the Under 15 Silver – and they brought several medals back on the return journey. Pride of place must go to Philip Pahatouridis for his win in the boys singles when he beat Lancashire’s George Priestman in the final: an excellent effort which should now give him a Grade 1 ranking. Amit Chaudhari won his group to reach the quarter finals. In the girls singles, Hannah Charlton built on her recent success at Thornaby by reaching the semis to win a bronze medal. And the mixed doubles brought more bronze medals when both pairs of Philip & Alisha Israni and Amit & Annie Karn were semi final losers.
Further afield, Asmita Chaudhari won a bronze medal in the Under 11 girls doubles at the Oxfordshire event and in the North Midway tournament at Sheffield our Under 18 team came 4th of the six competing teams but produced a number of good performances.
