Junior Tournament Latest News
Members of Northumberland's junior badminton squads recently enjoyed success at two of the early-season tournaments. Ira Banerjee of Newcastle looks like being a star for the future. Aged just 10, she played in the first of the new season's events for under 11s, held at Milton Keynes, and tasted success at both singles and doubles. In a field of 24 young hopefuls, she won her initial group with three straightforward victories. She then won a very tight semi-final 26-24 against Amy George of Hertfordshire before going down 13-21 to Nicola Gresty (Gloucestershire) in the final. In the girls doubles, she teamed up with Nicola Gresty, scoring a 21-14 victory over Amy George and her partner Isabel Hatt.
Several of Northumberland's older players travelled to Liverpool for the annual age-group tournament and tasted some success. In the Under 15 singles events, both Ben Mellish and Emma Reaston lost close group matches to the eventual winners, whilst Tom Appleyard won his group before losing in the quarter finals. In the Under 17 singles, Jordan Arkle, Steven Gibbons and Sam Mellish all won their groups before losing in the knockout stages, while Victoria Brewis had two good group wins. However, the major achiever of the day was Sam Mellish, who teamed up with Joshua Au Yeung to reach the final of the under 17 boys doubles, losing to a Lancashire pair by the close margin of 17-21.

Sessions 1,2 and 3 will be held on October 14th, 21st and November 4th 9.30 - 5.30 at Church High School, Newcastle. This will be followed by the assessment day on 16th December 10 -4.00pm at Church High.
